"In a world dominated by pixels and synthetic pigments, a master artist preserves a 1,300-year-old alchemical lineage."
Preserving the ancient Kerala Mural discipline. Armed with hand-ground stones, organic leaf juices, lamp soot, and sacred geometries, Guruvayur Devaswom-trained master Guru Hariharan Swastik translates temple fresco secrets into breathtaking custom installations for high-end luxury residences and commercial sanctuaries.
Kerala Mural painting is an ancient, highly structured temple art form dating back to the 7th century. It is characterized by its linear precision, elaborate ornamentation, three-dimensional shading, and a spiritual geometry governed by ancient texts like the *Shilparatna*.
More than just painting, it is a science of natural preservation. It strictly employs a five-color palette (Panchavarna) extracted from organic mineral deposits, plants, and lamp soot, bound together with natural gum and tree resins.
To understand Hariharan's work, one must first look at the ancient code of the fresco. Kerala Mural Art is not merely decorative painting; it is an act of devotion and natural alchemy. Governing this lineage is the **Panchavarna**—the sacred science of the five colors:
Extracted from ground minerals and stones (Shiladathu).
Created from natural minerals, representing activity and power.
Sourced from the juices of the Eravikkara leaf and mineral oxides.
Derived from white clay or lime plaster bases.
Collected from oil lamp soot (Kajal) mixed with tree resin.

Born in 1984 in the culturally rich region of Chiravathoor, Kasaragod, India, Hariharan Swastik was captivated from an early age by the silent, fading stories painted on local temple walls. This fascination led him to the legendary Institute of Mural Painting at Guruvayur Devaswom, where he enrolled in a rigorous five-year Gurukula-style national diploma program from 2000 to 2005. Under the tutelage of traditional masters, he absorbed the strict mathematics of divine posture, the delicate extraction of mineral pigments, and the ancient guidelines of classical preservation.
Rather than allowing this 1,300-year-old heritage to remain locked behind temple gates, Hariharan dedicated his career to bringing it to the modern world. He traveled extensively across the Indian subcontinent, restoring deteriorating historical frescoes in ancient palaces and conducting workshops to reintroduce natural organic dyes to contemporary artists.
In 2012, a pivotal exhibition at the Indian Pavilion during Dubai's Global Village introduced his work to the UAE. Sensing a profound connection and curiosity within the region's diverse design landscape, Hariharan made Dubai his permanent home. Over the last twelve years, he has successfully bridged the gap between heritage and high design, executing bespoke installations for luxury residences, commercial spaces, and galleries across the Emirates. Today, with over 24 years of dedication, his practice stands as a living testament to the endurance of alchemical art.
