Kuchipudi classes in Sharjah

The theatrical brilliance of Andhra Pradesh, taught in Sharjah. Kuchipudi is the only major classical form rooted in dance-drama tradition, quicksilver footwork, spoken verse, expressive abhinaya, and the iconic Tarangam where the dancer performs on the rim of a brass plate. Standardised training for kids and adults at Kairali.

The Form

Quicksilver footwork. Storytelling on stage

Kuchipudi takes its name from the village in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, where the form was preserved by the Bhagavatar tradition of Brahmin male performers. Standardised in the 17th century by saint Siddhendra Yogi, who composed the seminal Bhama Kalapam, Kuchipudi today is performed as both solo and group dance-drama by men and women alike.

Hallmarks of the form include the Tarangam, a visually striking technique where the dancer performs rhythmic sequences while balancing on the rim of a brass plate (sometimes also balancing a pot of water on the head), and the integration of spoken dialogue alongside song and dance. Kuchipudi is associated with the element of Earth, grounded, dynamic, conversational.
