Indian Percussion Student Handbook

Percussion is timing architecture - clarity first, speed later.

Welcome to Indian Percussion at Kairali

This handbook helps students and parents understand how progress happens in tabla and mridangam training.

What Percussion Builds

Percussion training develops:

  • Timing control
  • Coordination
  • Attention stamina
  • Structured memory (patterns and korvais)
  • Performance confidence

It also improves rhythm sense for dancers and singers.

What to Bring to Class

  • Instrument + required accessories (strap/stand)
  • Small towel
  • Notebook (stroke names + lesson patterns)
  • Metronome or tala app

Before Class

  • Basic wrist and finger warm-up
  • Posture check (straight sitting supports control and stamina)

After Class - Same Day Routine

  • Practice the corrected stroke slowly (clarity)
  • Practice one korvai broken into parts
  • Do not chase speed immediately after learning new material

20-Minute Daily Practice Plan

5 min: Basic strokes slow (tone clarity)

10 min: One korvai in parts

5 min: Tempo control with metronome/tala

Why This Method Works

Skill improvement accelerates when practice targets specific weaknesses using feedback and repetition, rather than repeating full pieces without correction.
